Why we built this

"We built MVV Klaar because we lived through it — preparing for this exam from abroad, without a good tool, is unnecessarily hard. The questions are public. The exam is learnable. You just need everything in one place."

— MVV Klaar team, Netherlands

The exam has three parts — Dutch Society (KNS), Speaking, and Reading. All three are taken at your nearest Dutch embassy or consulate. MVV Klaar covers all three, from first question to mock exam. Candidates from Morocco, Turkey, Indonesia, India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Ghana, Brazil and many other countries use MVV Klaar to prepare.

"I could practise completely on my own, from abroad. I didn't need to ask anyone for help."
— MVV candidate, passed first attempt
"No more 2-hour teaching sessions. She prepared independently and passed. This is what we wished existed."
— Partner of an MVV candidate, Netherlands
Who needs the MVV exam?
Bringing someone to the Netherlands?
They need to pass this exam first.

Anyone between 18 and 65 who needs an MVV (Machtiging tot Voorlopig Verblijf) must first pass the Basisexamen Inburgering Buitenland at the Dutch embassy in their home country. MVV Klaar is built for exactly this preparation.

💑
Partners & Spouses
The most common reason. Whether married or in a long-term relationship — your partner must pass the exam before applying for an MVV. Known as gezinshereniging (family reunification) or gezinsvorming (family formation).

🙏
Spiritual Counsellors
Imams, priests, pastors and other spiritual leaders (geestelijk bedienaren) coming to the Netherlands must also pass the Basisexamen Inburgering Buitenland before applying for an MVV.

🌍
Non-Dutch sponsors too
You don't need to be Dutch to bring your partner. Non-EU residents with a valid Dutch residence permit can sponsor an MVV. The exam requirement applies to the partner — regardless of sponsor nationality.

💡 Good to know: The exam result is valid for 1 year. You must apply for the MVV within that year. Each section (KNS, Speaking, Reading) can be retaken separately if needed — you never lose passed sections. Registration is via naarnederland.nl and costs €150 for all three parts (€50 per section).
What you are preparing for

Three sections.
All taken at your nearest Dutch embassy.

The exam is taken on a computer at the Dutch embassy or consulate in your home country. You must pass all three parts. Results arrive within 8 weeks. Each part can be retaken individually if needed — you never lose progress on parts you have already passed.

Two types of items: Vraag-Antwoord (Question & Answer) where you hear a question and speak your answer, and Aanvulzinnen (Sentence Completions) where you hear the start of a sentence and complete it.

Hear it. Say it. Pass it.

The Speaking section fails more candidates than any other part — not because of grammar, but because Dutch sounds are unlike any other language. MVV Klaar uses text-to-speech audio so you can hear every word and question spoken in Dutch, as many times as you need.

FAQ

Common questions

What are the exact pass marks for each exam section?+
Dutch Society: 21 out of 30 correct (70%). Speaking: 34 out of 44 points — 22 items scored 0, 1 or 2 by human examiners based on adequacy, pronunciation and fluency. Reading: 14 out of 19 correct. Each part costs €50 to sit (€150 total). Retake fees: Dutch Society €40 · Speaking €60 · Reading €50.
How long does each exam section take?+
Dutch Society: 30 minutes. Speaking: 30 minutes. Reading: 35 minutes. All three sections are done on the same computer at the embassy. The official practice exams (available free at naarnederland.nl) are the same length as the real exam for Reading and Speaking.
Are the speaking questions really all published in advance?+
Yes. The Dutch government publishes the complete Speaking question bank — all 82 Q&A questions and all 457 sentence completion starters — on naarnederland.nl. The exam draws from this fixed list. There are no hidden or surprise questions. MVV Klaar includes all of them with audio, translations and practice tools.
What equipment do I need to practise the speaking section?+
You need a computer or laptop with a microphone (or a headset with microphone). A desktop PC needs an external microphone. This is also required for the real exam at the embassy — practising with a microphone beforehand is strongly recommended to get comfortable speaking into one.
How long is my exam result valid?+
Your result is valid for 1 year from the date all three parts are passed. You must apply for your MVV with the IND within that period. DUO sends results within 8 weeks of the exam, often faster.
Is there a refund policy?+
All sales are final — this is a digital product with immediate access. If you have a technical issue or concern, email info@mvvexamen.nl and we will look into it. Any resolution is at our sole discretion.
How do I register for the MVV exam?+
You register through DUO (Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs) at duo.nl. You choose a date and location at the Dutch embassy or consulate in your home country. The exam fee is €50 per section (€150 total). Results are sent within 8 weeks. Start practising on MVV Klaar before you book so you know you're ready.
What happens if I fail one part of the MVV exam?+
You only need to retake the section(s) you failed — you never lose credit for sections already passed. Retake fees: Dutch Society €40 · Speaking €60 · Reading €50. There is no limit on the number of retakes. Use MVV Klaar's mock exam mode to identify weak areas before booking a retake.
What is the difference between the MVV exam and the inburgering exam?+
The MVV exam (Basisexamen Inburgering Buitenland) is taken at the Dutch embassy in your home country before you can enter the Netherlands. It tests basic Dutch at A1 level. The inburgering exam (Inburgeringsexamen) is taken inside the Netherlands after you arrive and tests a higher level (A2/B1). MVV Klaar covers the MVV exam only.
How long does it take to prepare for the MVV exam?+
Most candidates need 4–12 weeks depending on their Dutch language background. If Dutch is completely new to you, aim for 8–12 weeks. If you already have some Dutch exposure, 4–6 weeks of daily practice is usually enough. Start free on MVV Klaar — the study deadline tracker shows exactly how many days you have left before your exam date.
How do I book my exam appointment at the embassy?+
You book your exam date and location through DUO at duo.nl. Available embassies and consulates vary by country, and waiting times can range from a few weeks to several months depending on location — book as early as possible. You will receive a confirmation with the exact date, time and address.
Can I take the MVV exam in the Netherlands, or only abroad?+
The Basisexamen Inburgering Buitenland (MVV exam) must be taken at a Dutch embassy or consulate in your country of residence, before you travel to the Netherlands. It cannot be taken inside the Netherlands — that is a different exam (the inburgering exam at A2/B1 level) for people who already hold a residence permit.
Is MVV Klaar affiliated with the Dutch government, DUO or IND?+
No. MVV Klaar (mvvexamen.nl) is an independent practice platform operated by ALAI, a registered Dutch business (KVK 42051295). It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to DUO, IND or the Dutch government. All official exam registration must be done directly through duo.nl.
How long is the MVV visa sticker valid once issued?+
The mvv visa sticker shows a "valid from" and "valid until" date — typically a 90-day window. You must enter the Netherlands before the "valid until" date printed on the sticker — not 90 days from when you receive your passport back. The sticker allows multiple entries (MULT) during this window. The IND advises not to book flight tickets until you have physically received the visa sticker, as processing after the embassy appointment can take up to 2 weeks, though some applicants in India have received their passport back within about a week.
What should I bring to my MVV visa sticker appointment at the embassy?+
Typically required: a copy of the IND decision letter, your passport plus a copy, a new unused passport photo meeting Dutch requirements, the original legalised marriage certificate plus copies (including translations and legalisation stamps), and a copy of the Partner in NL's passport and visa/residence permit — even if not explicitly listed in the IND letter, bring copies of whatever was originally submitted to the IND. Confirmation emails often don't include the exact address — double-check the venue before travelling, since embassy/consulate addresses can differ from VFS visa application centres in the same city. Keep your legalised birth certificate too — it's typically needed later for municipality (gemeente) registration after arriving in the Netherlands, not for this appointment.
